Fundraising with Amberlea Animal Hospital.

By Uncategorized

We are participating in National Cupcake Day™ for SPCAs & Humane Societies. It’s a brand new event and will help raise awareness and urgently-needed funds to support animals that are abused, abandoned, neglected or no longer wanted.

National Cupcake Day is Monday, February 24th and the Amberlea Animal Hospital team will be baking the most delicious, delectable and scrumptious cupcakes you can possibly imagine. I just KNOW you want one! Or two! Or six! Will you please consider donating online to join our Cupcake Day Party? Not only will you get to enjoy a yummy cupcake, but you’ll be supporting a cause that really matters to us.

Click “Donate Now” to make a donation online. There are various gift amounts on the On-Line Bakery site for those that wish to make donations $10 or greater. There is also a space to put in donations less than $10. These donations will go directly to the SPCA. Cupcakes are $2 for one or three cupcakes for $5. Maximum order is six cupcakes per donation. If you make a donation on-line come to our clinic on Monday, February 24th and pick up your cupcakes.

You may also make donations at the Amberlea Animal Hospital on Monday, February 24th and we will donate the funds to our local SPCA. Don’t forget to pick up your cupcakes!

If we won’t see you on Monday, February 24th, please donate anyways. There are tens of thousands of animals across Canada who need to be rescued from abuse and neglect – and to have a second chance!

A Visit from a Pickering Student

By Uncategorized

Meet Rachael, an aspiring Veterinarian. I just love her initiative. Friday was a PA Day for most students but instead of staying home and enjoying the day off, Rachael spent the morning with us to observe some surgeries. She is a bright, well-spoken, outgoing person and I am sure she will be a great veterinarian. We enjoyed having her and we wish her all the best.

So Proud of our Pickering Vet Tech

By Uncategorized

Congratulations! Our vet tech, Michelle, completed her first marathon this past weekend. We went down to the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon to cheer her on. 42.2km is a long way to run, but she did it. Great job, Michelle! We are all very proud of you!

Happy Ending for Bo in Pickering

By Uncategorized

Update. We are happy to report Bo has found his forever home. At our vet clinic in Pickering we provide services for Golden Rescue and we had Bo and his foster mom in recently for a checkup (see our Facebook page Sept. 5th post). He was up for adoption through Golden Rescue, but he has found a great new home. We are very happy for him and his new family. I didn’t think it would take long for Bo to find a home because he is a very special dog. Thank you to Bo’s foster mom for taking Bo in and taking such good care of him. If you are interested in adopting a Golden contact the Golden Rescue. www.goldenrescue.ca

The Mouth is Home to 1000s of Bacteria

By Uncategorized

February is dental health month.

Dental disease is one of the most common medical conditions seen by veterinarians. Over 68% of dogs over the age of 3 and 2/3 of cats over the age of 3 are estimated to have some form of periodontal or dental disease.

The mouth is home to 1000s of bacteria and as they multiple on the surfaces of the teeth, they form an invisible layer called plaque. If allowed to stay on the tooth surface, plaque thickens and becomes mineralized. Mineralized plaque forms tartar and tartar thickens to become calculus.

The best way to prevent tartar build-up is regular home care, particularly tooth brushing. This might be difficult in cats and some dogs, in which case a routine cleaning under general anesthetic may be recommended.

Your veterinarian can also give you specific dietary recommendations that can benefit your pet’s dental health. In addition to brushing, there are mouthwashes and gels that can be applied to the teeth to reduce the number of bacteria present. Speak to your veterinarian about what is best for your pet.
